Survival is the first priority in this new world, and you kill anything that won’t keep you safe. They were the first to go—disposable people: politicians and spin doctors who’d thrown us to the wolves and tuned out our pleas for help—and there was pleasure to be found in their deaths. You don’t turn your back on a trained killer or the killer will put a knife through yours.
